Who we are
We are deeply committed to the rescue, rehabilitation, and lifelong sanctuary of the Marsh Tacky horse, a rare and endangered breed native to our home states of South Carolina and Georgia. The Marsh Tacky is not just a horse to us—it is a living link to our history. These resilient animals, once vital to the region’s fields, livestock, and military efforts, captured our hearts, and we are dedicated to ensuring that their legacy endures for future generations.
As one of the last remaining native breeds of the American Southeast, the Marsh Tacky is facing the very real threat of extinction. Our foundation focuses exclusively on the preservation of this remarkable breed. We provide comprehensive services, including medical care, transportation, long-term care, training, and rehabilitation, with a strong emphasis on matching each horse with a home based on its unique needs. Whether it’s a young horse with tremendous potential or an older horse seeking a quiet place to live out its days, we ensure that every Marsh Tacky finds a safe, loving home where they can thrive.
We are committed to the preservation of the breed, and our work goes beyond rescue. Our sanctuary offers educational programs and community events designed to raise awareness about the Marsh Tacky’s critical role in the history of the South. These horses were essential in working fields, moving livestock, and even serving in military efforts long before the advent of modern transportation methods. By educating the public about the breed's history, we aim to inspire a deep respect and appreciation for these incredible animals.
In every action, from rescue to recovery, we strive to ensure that each Marsh Tacky in need finds a soft landing. Our goal is to provide these horses with not only a safe haven but also the best possible care, including medical treatment, and, when necessary, compassionate euthanasia to prevent suffering. Through these efforts, we aim to ensure that all Marsh Tacky horses have a secure, loving home at any given time.
Together with the leadership of our dedicated board members—Patricia Stafford, Tabby Harris, Ginger Hipp, and Jodie Reeves—we work tirelessly to protect, preserve, and celebrate the Marsh Tacky breed, one hoofbeat at a time.
